No one is denying the superior moral value of nonviolence as a political tactic. So of course we must recognize that a crime is a crime, a tautology which may well underwrite the concerted efforts of many a pious editorialist to explain this to you hoping absurdly to cover their own ass with an editor.

The question facing men like him must be how to choose a truly good method for making a statement opposing the evil of capitalist thanto-bio-political corporate domination, which is the almost infinitely greater injustice to which his crime has called attention.

Such as:

He might have thrown a pie filled with dog shit in the man's face, in which case many faces might have been targeted for the statement.

The reasons Mr. Mangione has given constitute a mitigating circumstance which a jury should consider as grounds for acquittal.

The injustice he has so strikingly opposed and the forms of it from which he himself was made to suffer must be assessed and judged. That is the trial that needs to happen.

The jury should also consider suspending their deliberations until then. Those deliberations should take place in public. Mr. Mangione would be a star witness. Many others might be called as well.
